Monday. The day I’ve been dreading all weekend… the day I have to talk to my mother. I always assumed that talking to her would get easier as I got older, but things have only gotten more complicated. She’s been sick these past years, though, so neither of us is really to blame for that.

The whole thing with her wanting to move back here has been on my mind all weekend, even when I tried to think about something else. I guess that’s my own fault for not telling her my decision right after talking to Spencer. It helps that he’s supportive of the whole thing, that’s for sure. I’m not sure what I’d do without him. Probably just wander aimlessly through life until I ended up like my mother.

That’s a scary thought.

I get out of bed and grab my phone.

“Where are you going?” Spencer asks.

I turn around as he opens one eye and looks at me.

“To call my mom.”

“It’s like… seven.”

“I know,” I say, nodding, “but she called and texted.”

“Seriously?”

“Yes… you better get used to it if she’s going to be living nearby.”

He pulls the covers over his face and groans. I laugh and shake my head as I walk toward the living room. After turning on the coffee maker, I sit down on the couch and pull up her number. It barely rings once before she answers.

“Hello?”

The tone of her voice seems off.

“Is something wrong?” I ask.

“No… why?”

“You sounded… worried.”

“Oh… I just… I was waiting to hear from you.”

“Mom, it’s like seven.”

“It’s ten.”

“Yeah, there… but it’s seven here.”

“Right. I thought maybe you forgot you were supposed to call me.”

I shake my head and roll my eyes.

“No, Mom, I didn’t forget.”

“Are you sure?”

“I literally just got out of bed.”

“OK… and what do you think?”

I sigh and lean back.

“I talked to Spencer, just because this isn’t a decision I could make on my own… and we think that it would be fine for you to come live in L.A.”

“Really?”

“Yes, but….”

“I’m so glad.”

“Mom… let me finish.”

“Sure, of course.”

“We need to have some rules… and conditions.”

“Right, whatever you want.”

“I don’t want anything, but I want to make sure that you’re staying healthy and happy. I don’t want you to fall back into… you know… and I want to make sure you’re gonna be OK.”

“I get it, honey.”

“So, yeah, basically you need to stay on your medication and be OK with having someone check on you periodically. If you don’t stay straight, well, then I’m going to ask you to leave and go back to Greenville.”

“It won’t happen, I promise.”

“I hope it doesn’t.”

“You can trust me, Amy… I’m a different person.”

I nod. She seems convinced of it, but I’m still skeptical. I think it’s justified, though, after everything she’s done. At least the last couple of years have been a little more… mellow, but I still can’t help thinking that she could slip at any moment. I feel bad sometimes that I don’t have more faith in her, but I just can’t help it.
